Rekey vs Replace Lock: Which Should You Choose?
Should I rekey or replace my locks?
Rekeying changes the internal pins of your existing lock so the old keys no longer work. Replacing the lock means swapping the entire hardware for a new unit. Both end with you holding a fresh key — but they solve different problems.
Rekey when the lock is in good shape and you simply want old keys retired: after a move-in, after a roommate or contractor leaves, or when a key has been lost. It is usually simpler and more economical than installing new hardware.
Replace when the lock is worn, damaged, builder-grade, or you want to upgrade to a higher security grade or a smart lock. Also replace if the lock has been forced or tampered with — internal damage may not be visible from the outside.
Many Marvin, NC homeowners we visit only need a rekey on move-in day. We can rekey every door in a typical 4-door home during a single visit and key them all alike, so one key opens everything.
